Winter Goals: Florida & The Everglades

Sunrise in a Cypress Dome - Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida.

I will be fortunate to be able to spend several weeks in South Florida in January and possibly February.  I spent about 5 months living within Everglades National Park during the first half of 2005 and have only been back briefly a couple times since.  This will be the first trip when I can really dedicate some serious time to photographing the region since that time and I am really excited.  Below are a few of the goals I have set out for myself.

  • Cypress Canopy – Ever since I started climbing trees about two years ago, I have looked forward to going back to the Everglades and getting into a huge cypress tree.  This will not only be an amazing experience but also provide a very unique perspective on a very, very flat landscape.  I plan to do both traditional photography as well as some panoramas.
  • 10,000 Islands – I have spent an enormous amount of time in the Everglades but most of that has been in the central and eastern portion of the region.  I have not done any exploring of the 10,000 Islands and the southwest corner of the peninsula.  At this point, I don’t know how much time I will have to dedicate to canoeing or kayaking so can’t be too specific with the goals.  I’d love to do the entire Wilderness Waterway but may not be able to spend that much time on the water.  I’d love to visit a number of sites including a few barrier islands, Watson’s Place, and the Cape.
  • Fakahatchee – One of my favorite parts of the Everglades region is Fakahatchee Strand, a section of the Big Cypress Swamp.  I have spent a little bit of time exploring this rather remote section but hope to spend a lot more time in there during January.
  • Book Updates – During my senior year of college I wrote a book about the Everglades using photographs taken the previous year.  I want to update both the information and some of the photographs in preparation for publication.  I won’t be able to do all the updates during this trip, but I hope to decide exactly what needs to be updated.

It should be a fun couple of weeks and I look forward to getting back into exploring the region!

  1. I look forward to seeing the results on your site here. I am a huge fan of your photography. I hope you are happy with your camera repairs. I am thinking of buying a new camera – any suggestions for a hobbyist. I was thinking a Canon EOS as I had one of these pre-digital. I have a little Canon at the moment which is infuriatingly slow. I am sure you are very busy so don’t worry if you don’t have time to reply to this. Thanks, Kerry

  2. @Kerry – Thanks for your kind words, check your email for some thoughts on cameras.
